MVC surcharges can turn a traffic case into a license problem. Before you pay, plead, or drive, know whether points, insurance, suspension, or restoration issues are still hanging over you.
A court fine and an MVC surcharge are different. You can resolve something in court and still have MVC consequences that affect your license, restoration, or ability to drive legally.
If you are dealing with surcharges, points, no insurance, DWI, refusal, or driving while suspended, confirm the full MVC status before getting back behind the wheel.
Common New Jersey Surcharge Triggers
Six or More Points
NJMVC assesses a base surcharge at six points, plus an additional amount for each point above six.
Driving While Suspended
A suspended-driving matter can carry court penalties and separate MVC surcharge consequences.
No Insurance
No-insurance charges can create serious license, surcharge, and registration consequences.
DWI / DUI
DWI and refusal cases can involve surcharge, interlock, restoration, insurance, and court consequences.
Restoration Fees
Paying one fee may not fix every hold or requirement. MVC restoration needs to be confirmed.
Court Holds
Missed court, unpaid fines, or unresolved tickets can keep the license problem alive.
Point Surcharge Snapshot
Issue
MVC Concern
Why It Matters
Six points in three years
$150 base surcharge
Can create payment and license problems if ignored.
Each point above six
$25 additional surcharge
The cost rises as the point total rises.
Point reductions
Not counted for surcharge history
A course or violation-free period may not erase surcharge calculation.
Unpaid surcharges
Possible collection and license issues
Do not assume the court case is the end of the problem.
How This Connects to Suspended License Defense
Surcharges can be part of a bigger license picture. A driver may need to deal with MVC restoration, municipal court, old fines, warrants, insurance, abstracts, or driver program issues before driving safely.
NJMVC says point surcharges apply when a driver has six or more points in the preceding three-year period. The base surcharge is $150 for six points plus $25 for each additional point.
Can a defensive driving course erase surcharge exposure?
NJMVC says point reductions can lower points in certain circumstances, but those reductions are not considered when calculating the three-year surcharge history.
Can I still be suspended after paying surcharges?
Possibly. Surcharges, restoration fees, court holds, insurance issues, and other MVC requirements can be separate. Payment alone does not always mean you are legally restored.
What should I do before driving again?
Check MVC status, court status, restoration requirements, surcharges, insurance issues, and any written notices before driving again.
